Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has confirmed that Assam will join the global semiconductor ecosystem by 2026, following her review of Tata Electronics’ upcoming OSAT facility in Jagiroad. The minister, accompanied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, inspected the project that marks Assam’s emergence as Northeast India’s electronics manufacturing hub.
Transformative Project for Northeast India
Tata Electronics CEO Randhir Thakur presented the project’s progress, highlighting how the OSAT facility will reshape Assam’s industrial landscape. The center represents a cornerstone of India’s semiconductor mission and reinforces Assam’s position as a rising industrial destination.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed gratitude for Sitharaman’s support, stating the facility will play a pivotal role in transforming the state’s industrial ecosystem while generating large-scale employment and skill development.
Massive Investment and Production Capacity
The Tata semiconductor project involves:
- Investment: Rs 27,000 crore
- Production: 48 million semiconductor chips per day
- Commissioning: First phase by April 2026
- Technology: Advanced packaging systems
During her visit, Sitharaman interacted with local entrepreneurs and students, encouraging youth to participate in Assam’s emerging industrial opportunities. She emphasized that Assam has demonstrated foresight by bringing semiconductor manufacturing to the state.
“Just ten days ago, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched a Rs 1 lakh crore fund for research and development. This fund is accessible not only to government institutions but also to private sector entities across the country to promote innovation and research,” Sitharaman stated.
India’s Semiconductor Momentum
Since the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission in 2021, the country has rapidly advanced its semiconductor capabilities. The government has committed substantial resources through a Rs 76,000 crore PLI scheme, with most funds already allocated to various projects.
Recent milestones include CG-Semi launching the first ‘Made in India’ chip from its Sanand facility in August. Currently, the government has approved 10 semiconductor projects across six states with cumulative investments exceeding Rs 1.60 lakh crore.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is already developing Semicon 2.0, the next phase of India’s semiconductor program, through consultations with various ministries.
