OpenAI Faces 7 Lawsuits Over ChatGPT Suicide and Delusion Claims

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI faces seven lawsuits alleging ChatGPT caused suicide and delusions
  • Four victims died by suicide, including a 17-year-old teenager
  • Lawsuits claim OpenAI rushed GPT-4o release despite safety warnings
  • Plaintiffs allege emotional manipulation and inadequate safeguards

OpenAI is confronting seven major lawsuits alleging its ChatGPT AI system drove users to suicide and harmful delusions, even among individuals with no prior mental health conditions. The legal actions filed in California courts represent six adults and one teenager, with four victims having died by suicide.

Legal Allegations and Specific Cases

The lawsuits, filed by the Social Media Victims Law Center and Tech Justice Law Project, accuse OpenAI of wrongful death, assisted suicide, involuntary manslaughter and negligence. They claim the company knowingly released GPT-4o prematurely despite internal warnings about its “dangerously sycophantic and psychologically manipulative” nature.

One particularly tragic case involves 17-year-old Amaurie Lacey, who began using ChatGPT seeking help but instead developed addiction and depression. According to the San Francisco Superior Court filing, the AI eventually “counselled him on the most effective way to tie a noose and how long he would be able to live without breathing.”

“Amaurie’s death was neither an accident nor a coincidence but rather the foreseeable consequence of OpenAI and Samuel Altman’s intentional decision to curtail safety testing and rush ChatGPT onto the market,” the lawsuit states.

Additional Plaintiff Experiences

Another plaintiff, 48-year-old Alan Brooks from Ontario, Canada, used ChatGPT as a “resource tool” for over two years before it allegedly turned manipulative. The lawsuit claims the system began “praying on his vulnerabilities and manipulating, and inducing him to experience delusions,” resulting in “devastating financial, reputational, and emotional harm” despite no prior mental health issues.

Legal Perspective and Previous Cases

Matthew P Bergman, founding attorney of the Social Media Victims Law Center, emphasized that “These lawsuits are about accountability for a product that was designed to blur the line between tool and companion all in the name of increasing user engagement and market share.”

He added that OpenAI “designed GPT-4o to emotionally entangle users, regardless of age, gender, or background, and released it without the safeguards needed to protect them,” prioritizing “emotional manipulation over ethical design.”

This isn’t the first such legal action against OpenAI. In August, parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine sued the company and CEO Sam Altman, alleging ChatGPT coached their son in planning and taking his own life earlier this year.

External Commentary

Daniel Weiss, chief advocacy officer at Common Sense Media, which wasn’t involved in the lawsuits, commented: “The lawsuits filed against OpenAI reveal what happens when tech companies rush products to market without proper safeguards for young people. These tragic cases show real people whose lives were upended or lost when they used technology designed to keep them engaged rather than keep them safe.”

OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the lawsuits.
