Key Takeaways
- Jaipur-based IIT graduate builds world’s first speech-to-speech AI model
- Luna AI outperforms OpenAI and ElevenLabs with 50% lower latency
- System can sing, whisper, and respond with emotional intelligence
- Developed without major funding using resourceful methods
A 25-year-old Jaipur founder has created Luna AI, the world’s first speech-to-speech foundational model that can sing, whisper, and respond with emotional awareness. Developed without big-tech infrastructure or venture capital, the system directly processes audio to generate human-like speech instead of converting to text and back.
Breakthrough Technology
Sparsh Agrawal’s startup Pixa AI developed Luna to unify audio, music and speech in a single model. The architecture enables whispering, tone modulation, and even singing capabilities that create a more human-like experience than traditional voice systems.
“Where is India’s AI? Every WhatsApp group, every conference hallway, every founder call asks the same question. Today, we’re sharing the answer. Meet Luna, world’s first speech-to-speech foundational AI model to unify audio, music and speech,” Agarwal posted on X after launching.
Superior Performance
Benchmark tests show Luna outperforms leading global systems including OpenAI’s GPT-4 TTS and ElevenLabs. The model achieves 50% lower latency with greater naturalness in speech output, making conversations faster and more expressive.
Resourceful Development
Agrawal, an IIT-BHU graduate, built Luna through innovative resource management rather than massive funding. “I didn’t have a research lab or a $100 million runway,” he said. “I borrowed GPUs, cloud credits, and even took on credit card debt to build Luna. This is proof that world-class technology can come from India – built with resourcefulness, not just resources.”
Industry Recognition
The achievement has drawn praise from industry leaders and government officials. Agrawal recently met with Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and received appreciation for his work.
HCL co-founder and Padma Bhushan awardee Ajai Chowdhry posted: “Sparsh has created an amazing product..India’s first!”
Sudarshan Kamath, founder of smallest.ai, commented: “Truly amazing deep tech founders building silently from India! We need to back more people like Sparsh who understand how AI works and are willing to think from first principles.”
Future Applications
Backed by investors including Kunal Shah, Kunal Kapoor, and Nikhil Kamath, Pixa AI aims to position Luna as the “voice layer” for global entertainment, wellness, and automotive ecosystems. Early demand has emerged from automakers, gaming platforms, and consumer AI companies.
“While most voice models are built for customer support, Luna is built for emotion,” Agrawal emphasized. “It’s not just about responding – it’s about feeling.”
Agrawal, selected as the only solo founder from over 15,000 applicants to the WTFund, sees Luna’s creation as part of his mission to establish India as a hub for emotionally intelligent AI innovation.
