NFL Warns Players About Gambling After NBA Scandal Leads to Arrests

NFL Issues League-Wide Warning Following NBA Gambling Scandal

The NFL has issued a league-wide memo to all 32 teams warning players about illegal sports betting activities, following a major gambling scandal that has rocked the NBA this week.

Key Takeaways

  • NFL warns all players about illegal sports betting via memo
  • FBI indictments lead to 31 arrests in gambling probe
  • League reiterates strict gambling policy with specific prohibitions
  • NFL has history of suspending players for gambling violations

League’s Strict Gambling Policy

The NFL’s memo, sent on Friday, explicitly prohibits players from betting on NFL games, fixing matches, or sharing confidential information with third parties.

“NFL players must not: (1) Place any bet on NFL Football. (2) Throw or fix any NBA game or event of otherwise manipulate or attempt to manipulate any play or other aspect of an NFL game. (3) Share confidential, non-public information regarding any NFL game, player, or event with any third-party,” the memo stated.

The policy also requires players to report gambling debts exceeding $10,000, warning that large debts could make them vulnerable to exploitation.

NFL’s History with Gambling Scandals

This isn’t the league’s first encounter with gambling issues. Wide receiver Calvin Ridley served a full-season suspension in 2022 for betting on multiple games during 2021.

In 2023, the NFL handed indefinite bans to several players including Quintez Cephus, C.J. Moore, Demetrius Taylor, Rashod Berry, and Shaka Toney, though they were later reinstated.

NBA Fallout Continues

Meanwhile, Miami Heat captain Bam Adebayo has expressed his team’s complete support for teammate Terry Rozier, who was arrested in connection with the probe.

“For us, as a team, we stand behind him, full support,” Adebayo told reporters in Memphis, Tennessee. “The biggest thing for us is keep praying for him, keep cheering for him behind the scenes and going out here to win games and change the narrative.”

Rozier maintains his innocence as the investigation continues. The FBI’s two indictments have resulted in 31 arrests total across both leagues.
