Tier-3 College Grads Fill 1 in 3 Jobs at Apple, Nvidia India

Study: 1 in 3 Apple, Nvidia India Employees From Tier-3 Colleges

A new survey reveals that 34% of Indian employees at tech giants Apple, Nvidia, and Zoho graduated from Tier-3 colleges, challenging the dominance of elite institutions like IITs and IIMs in tech hiring.

Key Takeaways

  • 34% of surveyed Indian employees at Apple, Nvidia, Zoho are from Tier-3 colleges
  • 74% of all respondents said college reputation matters little in career growth
  • Skills are becoming more important than pedigree in tech hiring
  • Survey covered 1,602 Indian tech professionals in September 2025

The Blind professional networking app conducted the study, surveying 1,602 Indian tech workers between September 17-24, 2025. The findings suggest a significant shift in hiring patterns among major technology companies.

Skills Trump Degrees in Modern Tech Hiring

While traditional recruiters like Goldman Sachs, Visa, and Oracle continue to prioritize elite college pedigrees during campus placements, technology leaders are increasingly focusing on practical skills.

A Salesforce employee noted in the survey: “In general, people from IIT/IIIT/NIT do better in the interviews. About 50 per cent of them get offers. The others have a 20 per cent success rate.”

However, a Goldman Sachs participant observed the rapid change: “Companies aren’t just looking at IITs any more, they’re hunting grads from small towns and Tier-3 colleges. They’re literally betting that with some training, anyone can become a tech rockstar.”

College Brand Value Declining Across All Tiers

The study used the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 to categorize institutions into four tiers. The findings show diminishing importance of college reputation across all categories:

  • 59% of Tier-3 alumni said college was “just another line” on their resume
  • 45% of Tier-4 (overseas) graduates felt similarly
  • 53% of foreign graduates believed their degree barely affected salary
  • Only 15% of Tier-3 graduates reported significant career benefits from their education

Remarkably, 74% of all respondents indicated that college name only mattered early in their career or not at all.

AI Transformation Reshaping Hiring Priorities

This hiring evolution coincides with AI-driven changes in the global job market. The technology sector faces simultaneous layoffs and aggressive pursuit of AI opportunities.

Industry leaders offer contrasting perspectives on AI’s impact. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warns that automation could eliminate up to half of entry-level tech jobs within five years. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang believes AI will both destroy and create positions, with adaptability becoming the crucial competitive advantage.

The message from Apple and Nvidia’s hiring practices is clear: demonstrated capability outweighs educational pedigree.

The survey offers hope to millions of Indian students outside elite institutions. As global tech companies expand their talent search, graduates from smaller cities and lesser-known colleges are gaining unprecedented opportunities. While the IIT-to-Silicon-Valley pipeline persists, it’s no longer the exclusive route to success in technology.
