Rural Inflation Turns Negative, Bringing Relief to Workers

India’s rural workers received significant economic relief in September as inflation rates for agricultural and rural labourers fell to near-zero levels, according to latest government data.

Key Takeaways

  • Agricultural labourers experienced negative inflation (-0.07%) for the first time
  • Rural labourers saw minimal inflation at just 0.31%
  • Food index declined for both worker categories
  • Overall CPI inflation hit an 8-year low of 1.54%

Detailed Inflation Figures

The Ministry of Labour and Employment reported that the All-India Consumer Price Index for agricultural labourers decreased by 0.11 points to 136.23, while the index for rural labourers dropped by 0.18 points to 136.42. The Food Index showed even steeper declines, falling by 0.47 points for agricultural labourers and 0.58 points for rural labourers.

Enhanced Data Collection Methodology

The Labour Bureau’s Consumer Price Index numbers are based on data collected from 787 sample villages across 34 states and union territories. The revised series incorporates significant methodological improvements including updated weighting diagrams reflecting current consumption patterns and the use of Geometric Mean to moderate price volatility.

Broader Inflation Context

Meanwhile, wholesale price inflation eased to 0.13% in September from 0.52% in August. The country’s overall consumer price index inflation declined to 1.54% – its lowest level in over eight years – as food items and fuels became cheaper during the month.
