Tripura Infant Raped and Murdered by Grandfather, Accused Arrested

Tripura Infant Rape and Murder: Grandfather Arrested

A 14-month-old infant was allegedly raped, murdered, and buried by her maternal grandfather in Tripura, triggering massive public outrage. The accused, Jaynal Uddin (44), was arrested from Assam within a day of the crime.

Key Details of the Crime

  • Victim: 14-month-old female infant
  • Accused: Jaynal Uddin (44), maternal grandfather
  • Location: Panisagar, Tripura
  • Date: Saturday night
  • Current Status: Accused arrested, investigation ongoing

How the Crime Unfolded

The incident occurred when the child was visiting her maternal uncle’s house with her mother. Around 8 PM on Saturday, family members raised an alarm after the infant, who had been taken by her maternal grandfather, failed to return for several hours.

Panisagar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rahul Balhara immediately launched a search operation with local assistance. Around midnight, police noticed freshly dug earth near the victim’s house.

“Our suspicions led us to dig at the spot, which resulted in the grim discovery of the child’s lifeless body,” SDPO Balhara told the media.

Investigation and Arrest

The body was recovered and sent to Panisagar Sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death and sexual assault allegations.

Jaynal Uddin, a resident of Uttar Padmabil gram panchayat, fled the scene after the incident. Following a formal complaint by the child’s grandfather on Sunday morning, an intensive search was launched.

The accused was apprehended on Sunday afternoon from Nilam Bazar in Assam’s Sribhumi district, which adjoins north Tripura. A special police team brought him back to Tripura for interrogation.

SDPO Balhara confirmed that while rape and murder charges have been alleged, final confirmation awaits the official post-mortem report. The investigation continues as the community demands severe punishment for the accused.
