The Vijay-led Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam has emerged as a major disruptor as counting of votes is underway in Tamil Nadu.
As per very early trends, the TVK is leading in 81 seats while the incumbent DMK-led alliance is ahead in 55. The AIADMK-led alliance, meanwhile, is ahead in just 67 seats.
The TVK is ahead of the DMK alliance in every region of the state, except in Chennai.
The AIADMK is ahead in North Tamil Nadu and West Tamil Nadu, the latter being the stronghold of the AIADMK supremo Edappadi Palaniswamy.
However, the bigger picture lies in the vote share, which shows that the TVK is eating into the vote share of the DMK alliance as well as the AIADMK front. The Vijay-led party has garnered 32 per cent votes in very early trends, equalling the DMK alliance. The AIADMK bloc, on the other hand, has maintained a vote share of about 30 per cent, according to very early trends.
The mismatch between the AIADMK alliance’s low seat tally and relatively higher vote share could be attributed to the party garnering more votes in less number of seats.
Meanwhile, if the trends hold, the TVK could emerge not only as a disruptor but also as the single-largest party in the state. Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has 234 seats, with 117 as the half-way mark.
