Ambedkar Jayanti 2026: Will schools and colleges remain closed on April 14?

Schools in several parts of India are expected to remain closed on April 14 in observance of Ambedkar Jayanti, which marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar.

Both government and private institutions in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka have included the day as a public holiday in their academic calendars.

Schools in Delhi are also likely to follow suit, in line with official notifications.

135TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF DR BR AMBEDKAR

This year commemorates the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar, widely recognised as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. The occasion is typically marked by tributes, cultural programmes, and activities focused on social justice and equality.

Educational institutions often organise special assemblies, essay competitions, and discussions highlighting his contributions to law, education, and social reform.

SERIES OF REGIONAL HOLIDAYS TO FOLLOW

Following Ambedkar Jayanti, schools in different states may continue to observe holidays due to regional festivals. Mid-April coincides with celebrations such as Tamil New Year, Vishu, Pohela Boishakh, and Bohag Bihu, leading to closures in states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Assam.

Later in the month, holidays such as Basava Jayanti, Garia Puja, Akshaya Tritiya, and Parashurama Jayanti may also impact school schedules depending on regional calendars.

The holiday period extends into early May, with May Day on May 1 being widely observed across the country. In addition, festivals like Buddha Purnima may result in further closures in certain states. As holiday schedules vary by region and education boards, parents and students are advised to check official school calendars for accurate details.
