Ahead of GTA VI launch, Rockstar suffers data breach, hackers threaten to leak inside info on April 14

While video game enthusiasts around the world eagerly await the release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI), Rockstar Games has confirmed a data breach. According to reports citing cybersecurity researchers, a group known as ShinyHunters claimed to have accessed the game developer’s data via a third-party service. While the group has not yet made the data public, Rockstar stated that only a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed and that there is no impact on the company or its players.

“We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This incident has no impact on our organization or our players,” a Rockstar Games spokesperson said to the publication The Cybersec Guru.

Due to the anticipation surrounding GTA VI’s release, Rockstar’s data has become highly valuable. The attackers targeted Anodot, an analytical platform used by Rockstar Games to track cloud costs and detect spending anomalies.

The group has set a ransom deadline of April 14, after which it has threatened to release the data. The report suggests that the potential exposure includes financial records from GTA Online and Red Dead Online, player spending and geographic data, marketing timelines, and contracts with Sony, Microsoft, voice actors, and music labels.

No impact on player data

However, there is no cause for concern for players, as the report indicates there is no evidence that passwords or payment details were accessed. The breach appears to be limited to corporate data.

GTA VI release timeline

GTA VI was earlier set to release in May 2026. However, Rockstar Games announced in November 2026 that the release had been pushed back by another six months. The company confirmed on X that GTA VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026.

The game will first launch on consoles—the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S. Rockstar Games is likely to release GTA VI on PC at a later date.

Fans of the Grand Theft Auto franchise have been eagerly waiting for the next-generation game. GTA V was launched in September 2013, over 12 years ago. The game was a major success and sold over 200 million copies worldwide.

GTA VI is expected to deliver an even more engaging gameplay experience than its predecessor and will be the first Grand Theft Auto title designed for current-generation consoles.
