Indian-born cheetah in Kuno welcomes 4 cubs, the 1st recorded birth in the wild

A historic milestone has been reached at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh as an Indian-born cheetah has given birth to four cubs in the wild.

This event, announced by the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav on April 11, 2026, marks the first time a cheetah born on Indian soil has successfully bred in a completely natural environment since the species was reintroduced in 2022.

The mother is a 25-month-old female who is the daughter of Gamini, a cheetah originally brought from South Africa.

This birth is scientifically significant because it represents the F1 generation, which is the first generation born in the host country, successfully reaching reproductive maturity.

While a previous litter was born to another Indian-born female named Mukhi in November 2025, that event took place within a managed enclosure.

The 25-month-old mother who recently bore four cubs has been free-ranging for over a year, making this the first birth in the absolute wild.

WHY IS THIS BIRTH A BIG DEAL FOR PROJECT CHEETAH?

This moment proves that cheetahs are finally adapting to the Indian landscape.

After being declared extinct in India in 1952, the species was reintroduced through a high-profile government programme.

Critics often questioned if the wooded terrain of Kuno would suit animals used to the African plains.

However, this birth suggests the habitat provides enough food and safety for a young mother to gestate and hunt.

At 25 months, the mother is at the ideal age for her first litter. Cheetahs usually reach maturity between 18 and 24 months.

The fact that she conceived and gave birth without human intervention shows she is not under stress and has mastered hunting native prey like chital and sambar.

HOW DO THE NEWBORN CUBS SURVIVE IN THE WILD?

Cheetah cubs are born vulnerable and weigh only 150 to 350 grams.

They have a thick mantle of grey fur on their backs which helps them blend into the grass, protecting them from predators like leopards.

They will stay with their mother for nearly two years as she teaches them to hunt.

While cub mortality can be high in the wild, the success of this Indian-born mother is a massive leap toward making the cheetah population self-sustaining.
