Tristan Stubbs was left frustrated after a key moment during Delhi Capitals’ chase against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, with the batter visibly unhappy over a decision that halted his rhythm at a crucial stage.

Stubbs attempted to change his gloves midway through an over, pointing out that the humid Chennai conditions had left them too wet to continue comfortably. However, the on-field umpires did not permit the change, citing rules around delays in play.
The decision did not sit well with the South African. With Delhi still in the contest, Stubbs struggled to regain momentum and was dismissed soon after in the final stretch of the chase. As he walked back, he exchanged words with the umpire before dropping his bat near the steps and hitting his helmet in frustration.
There was also visible concern in the dugout. Nitish Rana and head coach Hemang Badani were seen speaking to the fourth umpire, seeking clarity on the call.
The rules around such situations fall under time-wasting provisions. As per IPL playing conditions, a batter is expected to be ready when the bowler is set to deliver, and any delay can be penalised. There is no specific provision that allows a batter to change equipment in the middle of an over if it delays play.
Samson leads CSK’s batting show
Earlier in the evening, Chennai Super Kings posted a strong 212 for two after being asked to bat. Sanju Samson led the effort with an unbeaten 115 off 56 balls, marking his first century for the franchise and the first hundred of IPL 2026.
He was well supported by Ayush Mhatre, who continued to impress with a fluent 59. The pair added 113 runs for the second wicket, putting Chennai in a commanding position.
Delhi Capitals began their chase brightly, racing to 61 in the powerplay through KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka. However, wickets at regular intervals derailed their progress as Chennai’s bowlers adjusted well to the surface.
Stubbs kept Delhi in the hunt with a fighting 60, but his dismissal proved to be the turning point. Chennai Super Kings eventually bowled Delhi out for 189 to register a 23-run win, their first of the season.
