CIA deception, mountain escape: How US fooled Iran and rescued airman in daring op

A 7,000-foot climb across the rugged ridgelines of Iran’s Zagros mountains, a nationwide bounty on his head, and a high-stakes deception campaign unfolding in the shadows — the rescue of a stranded US Air Force airman had all the elements of a Hollywood thriller. As Iranian forces closed in, the United States turned to one of its most potent tools: misdirection.

The operation, which spanned nearly 36 hours, combined a complex special forces mission with an elaborate CIA-led deception effort designed to mislead Iranian search teams. While the airman evaded capture in hostile terrain, US intelligence fed false trails, buying crucial time for forces on the ground to locate and extract him.

The incident began on Friday when an F-15 fighter jet was downed by Iranian forces in southeastern Iran. US officials, as reported by Axios, confirmed that both the pilot and the weapons systems officer ejected safely and maintained communication.

The pilot was recovered within hours, despite the rescue operation coming under fire, including an attack on a US Black Hawk helicopter that injured crew members.

The weapons systems officer remained isolated in mountainous terrain for 36 hours, evading capture by navigating ridgelines up to 7,000 feet high, according to reports cited by The New York Times. While the terrain offered cover, it also complicated rescue efforts significantly.

Iranian forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Basij paramilitary units, conducted a wide-ranging search on the ground. The Iranian government publicly called on civilians to assist in locating the “enemy pilot,” offering rewards. CNN reported that local tribesmen fired on US helicopters during the search, adding to the challenges faced by rescuers.

The stranded officer employed survival techniques and limited his use of a beacon to avoid detection, communicating instead through a secure encrypted device, as stated by US officials. This approach allowed coordination with US forces without revealing his position.

Concurrently, the CIA launched a deception operation within Iran, disseminating false information that the airman had been found and was being moved overland for extraction, according to The New York Times and Axios. This misdirection aimed to divert Iranian search efforts away from the officer’s actual location.

US intelligence used specialised capabilities to track the officer’s position. Once his location was confirmed, a senior administration official told Axios that coordinates were shared with the Pentagon and the White House. President Donald Trump authorised the extraction, later confirming the mission’s success on Truth Social.

US special forces, already operating inside Iran since Friday and Saturday, inserted a team near the officer on Saturday night, as reported by Axios.

The extraction involved close air support from A-10 Warthog jets and Black Hawk helicopters flying under heavy fire. US aircraft conducted strikes on advancing Iranian convoys to secure the extraction zone.

A firefight occurred as the rescue team approached, according to The New York Times, but the mission was completed successfully. A senior US military official described it as one of the most challenging special operations missions in US history.

The operation faced logistical hurdles, including two MC-130J aircraft becoming immobilised, forcing the deployment of additional planes and the destruction of the stranded aircraft before withdrawal, as noted by The Wall Street Journal.

Reports also indicated Israeli intelligence support during the mission. An Israeli security source told The Jerusalem Post that Israel provided intelligence and paused regional strikes to aid the operation, though direct Israeli commando involvement was denied.

Following the rescue, Iran claimed to have shot down a US aircraft involved in the mission.

US officials highlighted the critical role of deception and intelligence in the operation. One official told Fox News it was a “needle in a haystack” situation — a lone airman hidden in difficult terrain, ultimately found and rescued through covert tracking and strategic misdirection.
