Desert turns snow-white: Unexpected hailstorm blankets parts of Rajasthan. Watch

The golden sands of the Thar Desert underwent a startling transformation on Friday, April 3, 2026, as a massive hailstorm turned parts of Rajasthan into a landscape resembling the snow-capped valleys of Kashmir.

Residents in the Arjunsar and Rajiyasar areas of Bikaner district witnessed a rare atmospheric event that saw temperatures plummet and roads disappear under a thick layer of ice.

WHY DID THE THAR DESERT TURN WHITE?

While the visuals shared by IFS officer Parveen Kaswan looked like a winter wonderland, this was actually the result of an intense hailstorm triggered by a Western Disturbance.

A Western Disturbance is a weather system that originates over the Mediterranean region and travels eastward, bringing moisture and cooling to northwest India.

When this moisture-laden air met the intense heat of the desert, it created powerful updrafts.

These are rising currents of air that carry water droplets high into the freezing layers of the atmosphere, where they turn into ice pellets.

As these pellets grow too heavy for the wind to support, they fall as hail.

WHAT WAS THE IMPACT ON FARMERS?

The timing of this storm is particularly devastating for the local agricultural community.

Many farmers were preparing to harvest their Rabi crops, which are winter crops like wheat and isabgol.

The force of marble-sized hailstones can physically crush these plants, leading to massive financial losses.

Experts are now looking at crop insurance schemes to provide relief to those affected.

IS THIS WEATHER NORMAL FOR RAJASTHAN?

Although Rajasthan is known for extreme heat, April hailstorms occur when there is high atmospheric instability.

This happens when hot air near the ground clashes with cold, moist winds from the north.

However, the sheer volume of hail seen in Bikaner is unusual and reflects a pattern of increasingly erratic weather events across the country.

According to the India Meteorological Department, this instability is expected to persist in divisions like Jaipur and Jodhpur until April 7.
