Apple turns 50: As Apple celebrates its 50 years today, April 1, the iPhone, one of its most iconic products, has come a long way. The first iPhone was launched in June 2007 in the United States. Priced at $499 and $599, it ran on a 2G network. In July 2008, Apple released the iPhone 3G across 22 countries, offering faster internet and selling over one million units in its first weekend.
A year later, in June 2009, the iPhone 3GS arrived, focusing on speed and performance improvements. By June 2010, Apple introduced the iPhone 4 at its developers conference, featuring a new design and a slimmer body.
In October 2011, the iPhone 4S was launched with Siri, Apple’s voice assistant. The iPhone 5 followed in September 2012, bringing 4G support and a bigger screen. Apple then introduced larger devices in September 2014 with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, marking a shift toward bigger displays and better battery life.
2016–2018: Premium design era
The iPhone 7 was launched in September 2016, improving performance and camera features. In September 2017, Apple unveiled the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, along with the iPhone X, which was officially released in November 2017 with Face ID and a new edge-to-edge display.
The lineup expanded further in September 2018 with the iPhone XS and XS Max, followed by the iPhone XR in October 2018.
2019–2022: Performance and connectivity boost
In September 2019, Apple launched the iPhone 11 series. The iPhone SE (2nd generation) arrived in April 2020, followed by the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro in October 2020, and the 12 Mini and 12 Pro Max in November 2020.
The iPhone 13 series launched in September 2021, and the iPhone SE (3rd generation) came in March 2022. Later that year, the iPhone 14 lineup debuted in September 2022, with the Plus version arriving in October 2022.
2023–2025: Modern iPhone era
Apple continued its yearly cycle with the iPhone 15 series in September 2023 and the iPhone 16 lineup in September 2024. Most recently, the iPhone 17 series, launched on September 19, 2025, came with several latest features and a new ultra-thin “Air” model.
From June 2007 to today, the iPhone has evolved from a simple device into a powerful tool, shaping the way people communicate, work, and live.
