OpenAI has introduced support for its chatbot on Apple CarPlay, allowing users to access ChatGPT directly from their car’s infotainment system. The feature is rolling out globally for iPhone users running iOS 26.4 or later and will be available across all ChatGPT plans.
The integration is designed primarily for voice-based interaction, enabling users to communicate with ChatGPT hands-free while driving. Once the iPhone is connected and the app is updated, users can open ChatGPT through the CarPlay interface and begin speaking when the system indicates it is ready.
Hands-free conversations
The addition of ChatGPT to CarPlay allows drivers and passengers to continue conversations without needing to use their phones. Users can start new chats, revisit recent ones, or continue ongoing discussions entirely through voice commands.
An optional setting in the ChatGPT app allows the system to automatically open in voice mode when launched in CarPlay. This removes the need to navigate menus, making the interaction quicker and more seamless, especially while driving.
The system may also reopen ChatGPT automatically if it was the last app used before the phone disconnected, offering continuity in usage.
How it helps drivers and passengers
For drivers, the hands-free functionality reduces the need to physically interact with a smartphone, which can help minimise distractions. It allows them to ask questions, get explanations, or engage in conversations while keeping their focus on the road.
On the other hand, passengers can use the feature for a wider range of tasks such as casual conversations, information queries, or continuing ongoing chats during a journey. The voice-based setup makes it easier for multiple users in the car to interact with the assistant.
Limitations and safety considerations
Although this feature is very convenient for drivers, it also has certain limitations. ChatGPT in CarPlay cannot access navigation data, live location, or vehicle-specific information. It also does not control other apps like maps or messaging services.
OpenAI has emphasised that users should rely on hands-free use, complete setup before driving, and only use the feature when it is safe and allowed under local laws.
