‘Put Rs 10 crore aside for this 13-Year-old’: How RR’s Zubin Bharucha’s visionary call turned Bihar boy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi into IPL’s next superstar

In the high-stakes world of the IPL, multi-million dollar decisions are usually reserved for established international stars. Yet, in November 2024, Rajasthan Royals’ High-Performance Director Zubin Bharucha made a request that left the franchise management in collective disbelief: “Put Rs 10 crore aside for a 13-year-old.” That 13-year-old was Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a left-handed prodigy from the small village of Tajpur in Bihar. While the request seemed “crazy” to the boardroom, Bharucha’s conviction was forged in the heat of the Royals’ trials in Talegaon, where he witnessed a level of talent that defied the laws of physics and age.

The Trial That Changed Everything
Bharucha, the man credited with polishing the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson, has a refined eye for “something different.” During the trials, Sooryavanshi faced a seasoned left-arm quick from Karnataka. Expecting the boy to be beaten by late swing, Bharucha was instead stunned when the first ball was dispatched over extra cover for six.

To test the limits of the youngster’s nerves, Bharucha cleared the nets and brought in specialist sidearm hurlers capable of cranking the pace up to a terrifying 158 kph. Most seasoned professionals struggle with such velocity; Sooryavanshi, however, remained unfazed. After calmly leaving a few deliveries, he rocked back and launched a 157 kph thunderbolt straight over the sightscreen.

“That’s not normal,” Bharucha recalled. “To do that off your fourth or fifth ball facing that pace that’s when you know this is something incredibly special.”

The “Jaiswal Multiplied by Two” Factor
Bharucha’s pitch to the Royals owners was simple yet audacious: Sooryavanshi was already “Jaiswal multiplied by two.” He noted a unique, Lara-esque backlift—an exaggerated coil that went over the head, allowing the boy to dominate bounce and pace with freakish timing.

The Royals eventually secured him for Rs 1.1 crore at the mega auction in Saudi Arabia, a fraction of the budget Bharucha had requested but a massive statement for a player who hadn’t even reached his mid-teens.

Validating the Vision
The investment paid immediate dividends. In IPL 2025, at just 14 years and 32 days old, Sooryavanshi smashed a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans, becoming the youngest centurion in men’s T20 history.

His meteoric rise has continued into the 2026 season. On March 30, 2026, playing against Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati, the now 15-year-old solidified his “super-young superstar” status. He blazed a 15-ball fifty the joint third-fastest in IPL history eventually finishing with 52 off 17 balls. His dominance in the powerplay, including five massive sixes, led Rajasthan to an 8-wicket victory with 47 balls to spare.

From a village in Bihar to the pinnacle of the IPL, Sooryavanshi’s journey is a testament to Bharucha’s scouting genius. By looking past the age on a birth certificate and focusing on the sound of the ball hitting the bat, Bharucha didn’t just find a player; he unearthed a “boy monster” who is currently rewriting the record books of world cricket.
