Google is making it cheaper to generate videos with AI. The company has announced that it is slashing prices for its video-generation model, Veo 3.1. This comes just days after OpenAI shut down the Sora video-generation platform.
Logan Kilpatrick, a staff member at Google AI Studio, posted this news on X. He took a subtle dig at OpenAI for closing down Sora in the post, insisting that AI videos will remain a key part of Google’s services. Logan wrote, “Video’s here to stay.”
Google launches new affordable Veo 3.1 Lite tier
Kilpatrick revealed that Google was now offering a more affordable plan to create videos, called Veo 3.1 Lite. And the company was also reducing the cost of generating videos for the pre-existing Veo 3.1 Fast tier.
The pricing for Veo 3.1 Lite starts at $0.05 (roughly Rs 4.7) per second for 720p resolution and $0.08 (roughly Rs 7.5) per second for 1080p.

As per Google, this tier generates videos at the same speed as Veo 3.1 Fast.
Google’s AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers can create limited videos for free. AI Pro users can generate 3 videos a day, while the limit is at 5 for AI Ultra users.
Google slashes Veo 3.1 Fast prices
Not only did the company launch a new affordable plan, but it also reduced prices of Veo 3.1 Fast, which now sits as the mid tier plan, just below Veo 3.1 Quality.
Veo 3.1 Fast will see its prices reduced from $0.15 (roughly Rs 14) to $0.10 (roughly Rs 9) per second for 720p and from $0.15 to $0.12 (roughly Rs 11) per second for 1080p on April 7, 2026.
The 4K video pricing also sees a slight reduction from $0.35 (roughly Rs 32) to $0.30 (roughly Rs 28) per second.
Why is Google dropping Veo prices?
Google claims that it wants to make video generation more accessible for more developers by the introduction of a new lower-cost Veo tier. The timing of this change also coincides with OpenAI’s shutdown of Sora, which reportedly had around 5,00,000 active users.
The reduced prices could allow users who previously used Sora to switch to Google’s Veo 3.1.
Despite Sora’s shutdown, the AI video-generation space still has some competition. Elon Musk has already teased that xAI’s model, Grok Imagine, is set for a major update soon.
ByteDance’s SeeDance 2.0 model has also gained popularity after users created clips including Hollywood characters such as Star Wars’ Darth Vader. However, the model will likely not be released outside China.
