Himachal: Shoolini University announces scholarship as tribute to ex-student who died by suicide

Shimla, Following massive outrage from students over the alleged suicide of an ex-student from Shoolini University in Solan, the university on Wednesday announced a scholarship covering the MBA programme for one student from an economically weaker background for the next academic session.

Nitin Chauhan was allegedly harassed and denied the salary he was promised for a job he secured through campus placement, which led to him taking the extreme step, according to students.

The scholarship has been established as a tribute to Nitin’s journey and aspirations and will be available for the next ten years.

In an official statement, the university stated that on March 29, Nitin, a student in the MBA program, died by suicide by hanging himself in Solan. The university expressed its condolences, stating that the entire community stands in mourning with his parents, family, and loved ones, and they pray for strength and peace for the family.

“This comes from a place of deep care, responsibility, and to keep his memory alive in the institution. Shoolini University’s faculty, leadership, and support systems remain accessible and committed to student welfare. We urge all students to reach out, engage in dialogue, and prioritise their mental and emotional health,” the university said.

This announcement followed a large protest by students on March 31, during which they blocked the road, demanding justice for the deceased, an apology from the university authorities to Nitin’s parents, and the removal of Avnee Khosla, the Trustee and Vice President of the university.

According to students, Nitin was placed in a company in Dehradun and promised a salary of 50,000, but was only receiving 25,000 while being forced to work long hours from morning until midnight. They claimed that when he reached out to the placement cell, no assistance was provided, and he also faced intimidation. They believe this extreme stress ultimately led him to take his life.
