India on Monday condemned recent attacks on United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon, calling on all parties to ensure the safety and security of personnel deployed under the UN flag. An Indonesian peacekeeper was killed and another critically injured after a projectile struck a position of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) near Adchit Al Qusayr on March 29, news agencies reported.
In a statement, India’s Permanent Mission to the UN said it “strongly condemns” the attack and paid homage to the fallen “Blue Helmets”. “We urge all parties to ensure the safety and security of the peacekeepers,” it said.
Highlighting its long-standing role, the mission said UN peacekeeping represents “multilateralism in action”, carried out in difficult conflict zones under an international mandate. It added that India, one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations and among those that have suffered the highest casualties, remains committed to strengthening accountability.
India also referred to UN Security Council Resolution 2589, adopted in August 2021 during its presidency of the Council, which calls for action against those responsible for crimes against peacekeepers and urges member states to ensure accountability.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned the incident, expressing condolences to the family of the deceased peacekeeper and the government of Indonesia, and wishing a swift recovery to the injured personnel.
A statement from his office noted that the attack was among several recent incidents that have endangered peacekeepers amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. Guterres stressed that attacks on UN personnel may constitute war crimes and called for accountability.
He urged all sides to de-escalate and uphold international law, emphasising the need to ensure the safety and freedom of movement of UNIFIL personnel.
As of February 2026, UNIFIL comprises over 7,500 peacekeepers from 48 countries, including 642 personnel from India, making it one of the largest troop contributors to the mission.
