Codex chief says OpenAI coding agent here to stay amid Sora shutdown

OpenAI is in code red mode once again. The Sam Altman-led firm recently announced that it was shutting down the Sora video-generation platform, as it shifts focus to entreprise products to challenge Anthropic. This sparked fears over the company potentially stopping development of its coding agent, Codex. However, as per Codex chief Thibault ‘Tibo’ Sottiaux, OpenAI is instead doubling down on its coding agent.

Tibo clarified concerns in a post on X, confirming that OpenAI had no plans to shut down Codex. He wrote, “For the avoidance of doubt. The Codex App is here to stay.” The Codex chief teased that users can expect a lot more from the app soon. Sottiaux added, “We are just investing way more into it than before and it’s about to get quite awesome.”

Codex head Tibo clarified the coding agent’s future in a post on X.

Codex may do all your tasks in the future

Tibo reckoned that in the future Codex might do all your daily tasks. He explained, “We are about to expand its toolkit a whole bunch and I can’t think of using anything else anymore for all my daily tasks, way way outside of coding.”

Codex may get more features soon.

The shutdown of Sora will reportedly allow the company to focus more on Codex, and a new super app that combines ChatGPT, Codex and its AI browser, ChatGPT Atlas. Though it is unclear if Tibo was referring to the super app in his post.

Sora was believed to be consuming high computational power, with Sora’s head Bill Peebles previously claiming that GPUs were “melting” due to high usage.

Codex, OpenAI’s autonomous AI coding agent, was originally launched in May 2025 and later updated with a desktop app in early 2026. According to the company, Codex has over 2 million monthly active users. Codex supports features such as multiple AI agents handling bug fixes, pull request reviews, and automation with Git support.

On the other hand, Anthropic has brought several updates to its own coding agent, Claude Code, in the past few weeks. Claude Code now comes with a code review feature that can go through chunks of code written by AI. Users also get a new auto mode that allows the coding agent to make some decisions without the need for human approval.

OpenAI takes on Anthropic in entreprise market

As per previous reports, OpenAI is facing pressure from Anthropic when it comes to the entreprise market. The Dario Amodei-led firm has a stronger footing amongst businesses with tools such as Claude Code and Claude Cowork.

Codex’s CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, recently told employees that the AI startup could not be distracted by “sidequests.”

OpenAI is also said to be offering perks such as a 17.5 per cent rate of return and early access to new AI models to lure private equity firms to use its entreprise products. For context, Anthropic reportedly does not give any guaranteed rate of return for similar investments.
