Call of Duty sees massive 90% price drop on Modern Warfare; sparking rumours of 2026 sequel

The return of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) to the charts feels a little surprising. This is years old now, and yet it’s suddenly climbing in popularity again. It is ike a mix of heavy discounting, nostalgia, and maybe some disappointment with the newest titles has pulled players back. Back in 2019, the game rebooted the franchise, offering a darker, grittier campaign alongside a tighter multiplayer experience. As reported by Eurogamer, now, with Steam’s Spring Sale slashing the price to just £4. 99, that is a 90 percent drop, which appears to indicate players are finally returning to see what made this game stand out.

Call of Duty sees rare price drop as Modern Warfare surges in popularity

Price drops this big in the Call of Duty franchise are practically unheard of. Older titles like Black Ops II from 2012 are still priced higher, even during sales.

So seeing Modern Warfare cut to £4. 99 caught a lot of attention. It’s rare to see a game that isn’t part of the current mainline hub suddenly become this accessible.

The numbers tell an interesting story. Reports suggest that Modern Warfare (2019) recently peaked at nearly 58,000 concurrent players on Steam over 24 hours. Interestingly, the main Call of Duty app, which bundles the latest titles, reportedly sits slightly below that figure at around 50,000.

And these numbers don’t even include console players, which are usually the franchise’s strongest base.

Call of Duty’s price strategy hints at early engagement for Modern Warfare 4

Some rumours hint at a possible reason. The next instalment, often referred to as Modern Warfare 4, could be the big 2026 release. No one knows for certain, but this kind of early engagement strategy is believable. And at this price, it’s hard to ignore.

Not all is perfect for Call of Duty right now. Recent releases have received mixed reactions. Some fans enjoyed them while others felt a little let down. But the excitement isn’t quite the same as it was during the reboot. Maybe players are just nostalgic.

Call of Duty’s 2019 reboot recaptures attention amid competitor slump

It’s not just Call of Duty having ups and downs. Competing shooters like Battlefield 6 reportedly launched well but are now in the typical post-release slump. That leaves space for other games to reclaim attention. Right now, Modern Warfare (2019) seems to be filling that gap.

Players are downloading it, hopping back into matches, and spending more time in the maps that originally drew them in. Nostalgia plays a role, sure.
