Windows 11 setup without Microsoft account sign-in may soon be allowed, details here

If you have ever set up a computer running Microsoft Windows 11, you’ve likely noticed the tiring process of configuring settings during the setup stage. One of the most frustrating steps for many users is the requirement to sign in using a Microsoft account.

Statistically, only about 12 percent of email users rely on Microsoft accounts. However, this requirement could soon change. Microsoft is reportedly working on removing the need to sign in with a Microsoft account to use Windows 11 as part of improvements to the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE).

Microsoft has already confirmed that it is working on a major update for Windows 11. The upcoming update is expected to focus on performance improvements, reliability, and a better overall user experience.

Users may also see a WinUI-based Start menu and a faster File Explorer. However, earlier announcements about the update did not include the ability to use Windows 11 without signing in with a Microsoft account.

Microsoft executive confirms work on the change

Scott Hanselman, Vice President and Member of Technical Staff at Microsoft, recently confirmed that the company is working on removing the Microsoft account requirement.

Replying to a user who questioned the need for an online Microsoft account just to use a PC, Hanselman wrote, “Ya, I hate that. Working on it.”

His response suggests that people within the company are aware that many users are unhappy with the requirement. This could mean that users may soon be able to use their Windows computers without signing in with a Microsoft account.

The change may arrive as part of an improved Out-of-Box Experience, which aims to reduce distractions and help users stay focused while setting up their devices.

At the same time, Microsoft has announced several initial changes that will be available to Windows Insiders—the company’s beta testing program—during March and April.

One of the new features being tested allows users to reposition the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen. When AI tools arrived, Microsoft integrated Copilot across many apps. However, the company now appears to be reducing unnecessary Copilot entry points. This change will start with apps such as Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets and Notepad.

Users have also frequently complained about unpredictable Windows updates, which sometimes appear when people urgently need to use their computers.

Microsoft has acknowledged these concerns and is introducing several improvements, including the ability to skip updates during device setup to reach the desktop faster, options to restart or shut down without installing updates, the ability to pause updates for longer periods and fewer automatic restarts and notifications to reduce update interruptions.

In addition to these updates, users may also see an improved File Explorer, enhanced Widgets and more personalisation options for the Discover feed.

These changes are expected to gradually roll out through the Windows Insider program before becoming available to more users.
