Not just missile threats, Middle East staring at heavy rains like never before

A powerful weather system is racing toward the Persian Gulf, promising torrential rains in a region already battered by weeks of conflict.

Meteorologists say this unusually deep western disturbance could dump 100–200 mm of rain across Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Bahrain and nearby areas in just four to five days starting late March 2026.

In deserts that normally see less than 100 mm a year, the threat of flash floods is very real.

FLOOD WARNINGS SOUNDED

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) shows a strong cyclonic circulation pulling moisture far south.

The region of Muscat in Oman has already taken a hit, with more than 100 mm falling in days and reports of at least 4 deaths and dozens rescued from flooded roads, according to local news outlets.

Roads have turned into rivers and valleys overflowed in Muscat as emergency teams raced to help stranded drivers.

Similar cities in the region, primarily built on hard surfaces, cannot drain this volume quickly, raising fears of chaos like the record 2024 UAE floods that swamped areas in Abu Dhabi and Dubai streets and caused widespread damage.

WHAT’S AHEAD AS WEATHER AND WAR COLLIDE?

This inclement weather will arrive in an untimely fashion as the Iran war rages on.

Missiles have struck Israeli cities and Gulf bases, the Strait of Hormuz faces closure threats, and oil supplies have plunged 60 per cent.

Power plants and infrastructure in the Gulf regions are already under pressure from strikes and blockades. And now, the people in the war-struck region are preparing for flooding.

Washed-out roads could stall troop movements, cut aid to refugees, and knock out electricity when hospitals need it most.

When the 2024 rain struck Dubai and Abu Dhabi, it cost billions to recover and killed dozens across the Gulf without any war.

Now the potential weather event will be layered on top of active conflict, and could easily translate into a truly massive economic bill, higher casualties, and perhaps even force temporary halts in fighting as both sides battle rising waters.

Gulf leaders are urging caution as the system is also expected to linger into early April. In a land of sand and missiles, nature’s sudden fury may leave the deepest scars yet.
