A version put out within hours of a deadly explosion in Bahrain is now facing serious scrutiny, after new findings suggested that a US-operated missile, not an Iranian drone, may have been at the centre of the blast, reported Reuters.
The March 9 explosion ripped through a residential neighbourhood, injuring at least 32 people, including children. In the immediate aftermath, both Bahrain and the United States Central Command pointed to an Iranian drone strike.
Central Command dismissed any suggestion of a missile failure as a “LIE”.
A NARRATIVE BEGINS TO SHIFT
Days later, Bahrain acknowledged that a Patriot interceptor missile had been involved. Officials maintained that it had successfully intercepted a drone mid air and “saved lives”.
Yet, even as that admission came, a key gap remained – no public evidence of a drone.
Now, a detailed analysis of open source videos and satellite imagery has added a new layer. Researchers have concluded with moderate to high confidence that the missile was likely fired from a US-operated Patriot battery located a few kilometres from the site.
Experts who examined the findings found no clear reason to dispute that conclusion.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE POINTS TO
Footage from the night shows a missile cutting across the sky at low altitude before a sudden flash. Moments later, homes are left shattered, with debris scattered across streets.
The damage pattern, according to researchers, is consistent with a mid-air detonation of a Patriot interceptor over a residential area.
Two possibilities are now being weighed. One, the missile intercepted a drone, triggering the blast. The other, the interceptor itself, exploded, including its warhead and propellant.
With no confirmed drone fragments and the spread of damage on the ground, the second explanation is gaining ground.
NOT AN ISOLATED QUESTION
The Bahrain incident is not unfolding in isolation. It comes close on the heels of another episode in Iran that raised similar doubts.
On February 28, a girls’ school in Minab was struck during US-led operations, with the death toll later rising to 51.
At the time, there was no clear admission of responsibility. Later, investigators within the US Defense Department assessed that American forces were likely behind the strike, possibly due to outdated targeting data.
EARLY CLAIMS, LATER QUESTIONS
The two incidents are now being viewed together for a reason.
In Bahrain, a firm claim of a drone strike was issued quickly, only for a US-linked system to enter the frame days later. In Iran, clarity came only after initial uncertainty.
The pattern is drawing attention. How the first version of events is framed, and how it evolves as more evidence surfaces.
QUESTIONS WITHOUT CLEAR ANSWERS
Neither Bahrain nor Washington has fully addressed the emerging gaps. The origin of the missile, the absence of drone evidence and the cause of the detonation remain contested.
What is clear, however, is the impact on the ground – damaged homes, injured civilians and a growing sense that the full story is still unfolding.
In a conflict where seconds matter and narratives form instantly, the Bahrain blast is a reminder that what is said first is not always what stands last.
