NFL Trade Rumors: Jalen Hurts’ Philadelphia Eagles facing $40M dead cap nightmare as three-time All-Pro’s Patriots workout fuels blockbuster trade rumors

As of Friday, March 20, A. J. Brown has not been traded. That part matters, because the internet is doing what it always does when a star wide receiver posts up near New England. Still, this rumor is not coming from nowhere. Julian Edelman stirred it Thursday, and Brown working out with new Patriots safety Kevin Byard on Friday poured more fuel on top of it.

That is why the Brown-to-New England story refuses to die. The Patriots need a true No. 1 target. Mike Vrabel has history with Brown from Tennessee. Philadelphia, meanwhile, keeps getting dragged back to the same financial reality. If the Eagles move Brown before June 1, the dead-cap hit is steep enough to change the entire conversation.

Julian Edelman and Kevin Byard made the noise louder, but no trade has been reported

The latest round of speculation started when Edelman posted a GIF and the words, “We’re all Patriots. ” That alone was enough to send fans into a frenzy. Then came the photos of Brown working out with Byard, a new Patriot and also Brown’s former teammate. On social media, that looked like a breadcrumb. In reality, it was enough to restart a rumor that was already alive.

The important part is what has not happened. No trade has been reported.

That needs to stay front and center. Brown and Byard training together is notable because of the timing. It is not proof a deal is done. And the Byard angle cuts both ways anyway, because he also spent time in Philadelphia. This is exactly how offseason NFL rumor cycles explode: one post, one workout, one fan base reading tea leaves like they are front-office documents.

Karen Guregian’s wording is the line that matters most right now: “In short, the Patriots and Eagles are engaged in a staring contest. While the expectation is they’ll eventually come to terms on a deal, whether it’s in the coming weeks, or after June 1, which is preferred by the Eagles for monetary reasons, it’s also possible another team will swoop in.” That is not a done deal. It is leverage season.

Why June 1 keeps hanging over Philadelphia while New England waits for leverage

This is where the rumor gets real. The Eagles are not just weighing talent. They are weighing timing. Multiple reports have pointed to the same issue: trading Brown before June 1 would leave Philadelphia absorbing more than $40 million in dead cap, while a post-June 1 move would drop that number significantly. That does not kill a trade. It just makes patience part of the process.

New England also has reason to wait. NFL Media reported the Patriots signed Romeo Doubs, and that move could reduce some urgency on their side. If the Eagles want premium value, they may have to blink first. If the Patriots want Brown badly enough, they may still have to pay. That is why this has dragged into a pressure game instead of turning into a clean headline.

So yes, the rumor is loud. Louder than it was 24 hours ago, actually. But the smart read on March 20 is not that Brown is gone. It is that Philadelphia’s cap sheet still has the loudest voice in the room.
