Social media is making children unhappy, anxious and depressed, says World Happiness Report

Social media has long been criticised for its impact on young minds, but a new study from the World Happiness Report 2026 says the impact could be much more serious. The report warns that heavy use of social media among children and teenagers is linked to rising levels of anxiety, depression, and lower life satisfaction. Not just higher risks, according to the report, the impact is now big enough to show up in mental-health trends across entire populations.

The World Happiness Report 2026 highlights a worrying connection between the growing time adolescents spend online and a steady decline in their wellbeing over the past decade. Researchers say teenagers who spend more than five hours a day on social media are significantly more likely to experience symptoms of depression and anxiety compared to those who use these platforms sparingly.

“By “social media” we mean platforms that include user profiles, user-generated content, networking, interactivity, and (in most cases) algorithmically curated content. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Snapchat, TikTok, X, and YouTube all share these features,” the researchers note.

During the study, the researchers explained that the report examines global survey data along with long-term mental-health trends to understand how changes in lifestyle, technology, and social behaviour are affecting happiness levels worldwide.

The latest happiness report puts special focus on people under the age of 25, particularly in English-speaking and Western European countries where the drop in life satisfaction has been the sharpest. According to the findings, adolescent wellbeing began to decline in the early 2010s, the same period when smartphones and always-available social media became common. Researchers say the timing strongly suggests that the shift of teenage social life onto digital platforms played a major role in the rise of mental-health problems seen in many countries.

Teenage girls more vulnerable

The report also notes that the impact is not the same for everyone. Teenage girls appear to be the most affected, with studies showing a stronger link between heavy social-media use and depression, anxiety, body-image issues, and low self-esteem. Researchers warn that algorithm-driven feeds, influencer culture, and constant comparison with others can make young users feel inadequate or left out, especially when much of their social interaction happens online instead of in person.

And it’s not just about the amount of time spent online. The report highlights that passive scrolling through endless photos and videos chosen by algorithms is associated with worse mental-health outcomes, while lighter or more active use, such as messaging friends, tends to have fewer negative effects. The report suggests that moderate use may even feel neutral or slightly positive, but problems increase sharply once daily usage becomes very high.

There are also safety risks. The report links heavy use to higher chances of cyberbullying, sextortion, disturbing content, and online harassment, all of which can contribute to stress and emotional distress.

The researchers warn that social media is not just affecting individual users but may be reshaping the mental health of an entire generation, raising fresh questions for parents, educators, and policymakers about how young people should use these platforms in the future.
