Samsung is pulling the plug on the triple-folding Galaxy Z TriFold, here is why

Samsung has reportedly discontinued the Galaxy Z TriFold barely three months after launch. The company is said to be winding down sales of the TriFold in South Korea first, followed by the US, once existing stock is sold out. The triple-folding phone was sold in limited markets owing to high-cost with Samsung itself once claiming it was a showcase of its engineering capabilities rather than something that it was going to mass-market anyway.

In the US, the Galaxy Z TriFold was launched at an eye-watering $2,899 which roughly translates to Rs 2,68,100. Its exorbitant pricing kept it out of reach for most people, limiting its appeal to a small group of affluent early adopters and tech enthusiasts. As a result, the device remained a niche product despite generating interest for its innovative triple-folding design. The TriFold was only available through Samsung stores and website.

Samsung’s move to discontinue the Galaxy Z TriFold was somewhat expected, as its website recently stopped indicating future restocks and currently lists the device as “sold out.”

Now, a Bloomberg report suggests that the TriFold is getting the axe primarily due to its complex and costly manufacturing process. The triple-folding design, which comes with complicated hinges and advanced components, makes production challenging which is only accentuated by the increasing memory prices and other geo-politics factors.

In a recent interview, Won-Joon Choi, chief operating officer of Samsung’s Mobile Experience Business, said the company has not yet decided whether the TriFold will have a successor, citing its manufacturing complexity. For now, there are no confirmed plans for a follow-up model.

With no successor in sight and limited stock remaining, the Galaxy Z TriFold appears to be nearing the end of its run. As the final units are sold, the device is likely to remain a rare example of Samsung’s foldable experimentation.

For context, the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold features a unique triple-fold design with dual hinges, allowing it to unfold into a large 10-inch tablet-like display. It sports an LTPO AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 1,600 nits. The device is backed by a 5,600mAh Li-ion battery with 45W wired charging support, all within a 309-gram build.

It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. On the camera front, it offers a triple rear setup comprising a 200MP primary sensor, a 10MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultrawide lens, along with a 10MP front camera for selfies and video calls.
