Are lab-grown diamonds good for engagement rings? Here’s what the experts say

Choosing an engagement ring has always been about so much more than just picking out a piece of jewelry. It’s a physical marker of a promise, a symbol of a life together, and – let’s be honest – usually one of the biggest emotional and financial decisions a person will make. But recently, a new question has started popping up in jewelry stores and over dinner conversations: Are lab-grown diamonds actually a “good” choice for an engagement ring?

The quick answer is a resounding yes. But if you talk to anyone deep in the industry, they’ll tell you the real answer is all about the “why”—it’s a balance of personal values, design dreams, and the practical realities of modern life.

A New Way of Thinking About Tradition

We’re seeing a real shift in how couples approach this milestone. It’s no longer about following a strict set of rules or checking a traditional box. Instead, it’s about intention. Lab-grown diamonds haven’t arrived to “replace” mined diamonds, but they’ve opened up a world of flexibility that simply didn’t exist twenty years ago.

As Isha Zaveri, Co-founder of Modera – A Fuzion Legacy, explains:

“Lab-grown diamonds are becoming a very natural choice for engagement rings today because they give couples a lot more freedom in how they design the ring.

One of the biggest advantages is that you can explore shapes that feel more personal and unconventional. Instead of feeling limited to the classic round, couples today are choosing elongated shapes, rare cuts, or silhouettes that feel unique to them and their story. ”

This move toward personalization means rings are becoming less like “stock items” and more like reflections of a couple’s specific journey.

The Value Factor: Dream Designs Meet Reality

It’s impossible to talk about lab-grown diamonds without talking about the price tag. On average, you’re looking at a 30% to 70% difference compared to a natural stone of the same quality. For a lot of couples, this isn’t about “saving money” as much as it is about “smart spending. ” It allows them to prioritize things like a larger stone or a more intricate setting that might have been out of reach otherwise.

Zaveri adds:

“Another big factor is value. Lab-grown diamonds allow you to go for a larger stone or a more statement design at a much better price point. This opens up possibilities that may otherwise feel out of reach, especially for couples who want something distinctive.”

In 2026, an engagement ring doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s part of a bigger picture that includes house deposits, dream weddings, and travel. Younger buyers are proving to be incredibly design-driven, and lab-grown stones allow them to get the look they want without derailing their other life goals.

Cultural Nuances and the “Emotional” Weight

Of course, the shift isn’t the same everywhere. In places like India, the conversation is a bit more complex. Aalika Parekh and Ashni Bhansali, Co-founders of House of Yarané, highlight this fascinating divide:

“Lab-grown diamonds are becoming an increasingly visible part of the engagement ring industry, particularly among younger buyers or non-Indians who are not buying the ring based on the emotional or traditional value of the diamond, but rather from a place of what is the best they can get today within the budget they have.”

They’ve noticed that for many, it’s a lifestyle choice:

“Today’s couples want more than just a ring. They are investing money, travelling, renting or saving up to buy a house, and shopping from luxury brands around the world. Because of this, engagement ring budgets can vary significantly depending on priorities. The price difference lab-grown diamonds offer helps them stay within budget while allowing larger stones or contemporary designs.”

However, they are quick to note that in the Indian community, natural diamonds still carry a massive amount of weight.

“In the Indian community, Natural diamonds are still very much the primary preference, where the emotional and societal value attached to them is far too deep to disappear anytime soon.”

In this context, jewelry isn’t just an accessory; it’s an heirloom and a piece of family legacy.

Does a Lab-Grown Stone Lose the Sentiment?

This is the big one. People often worry: If it didn’t come out of the earth, does it still mean the same thing? According to the experts, the “soul” of the ring has nothing to do with the origin of the carbon. Zaveri puts it beautifully:

“At the same time, the sentimentality of the ring does not change. An engagement ring is ultimately about the moment it represents — commitment, love, and the beginning of a shared future. Whether the diamond is mined or lab-grown, the meaning behind the ring remains exactly the same.”

Kushal Shah, Founder of MIJA, shares this grounded perspective:

“I absolutely think lab-grown diamonds make great engagement rings. At the end of the day, an engagement ring is really about the promise two people are making to each other, not just about how much money is spent on the stone.”

They are Versatile!

According to Yash Kataria, Director, Kataria Group of Companies they are too versatile to ignore:

“Lab-grown diamonds have become one of the top choices for engagement rings today, especially among couples looking for designs that balance elegance, scale, and value. Their versatility allows for more creative settings and larger stones while maintaining the design people associate with fine jewellery. We are also seeing a strong trend of pairing lab-grown diamonds with gold, particularly yellow and rose gold, which adds warmth and timeless appeal to modern engagement ring designs. At Kataria Jewellers, this combination has become a preferred choice for couples who want something contemporary yet classic.”

Mehul Jain, Founder at Ekaraa opines that they are practical:

“At Ekaraa, we have seen a profound shift in how luxury is defined especially amongst the millennial and Gen Z couples. Beyond beauty, they are also thinking about value, ethics, and personal meaning. Lab-grown diamonds resonate strongly with this mindset because they offer the same brilliance, durability, and elegance as mined diamonds, while allowing couples to make a more conscious and practical choice. Many young buyers appreciate that lab-grown diamonds make it possible to opt for larger, better-quality stones without compromising on design or budget. It’s about making an “empowered choice”, which is essentially owning a piece that is chemically and visually identical to mined diamonds, yet one that aligns perfectly with their values of transparency and mindful luxury.”

A Smarter, More Conscious Buyer

The rise of lab-grown stones is really a reflection of how much more “tuned in” we are as consumers today. We research, we compare, and we ask why. We aren’t as interested in what a ring should be as much as what it means to us.

Shah captures this perfectly:

“Today’s consumer is much smarter and more conscious about their choices. With everything that goes into proposals, weddings, and celebrations today, couples are naturally looking for options that feel meaningful but also make sense for them. Lab-grown diamonds allow people to choose a beautiful diamond without feeling like love has to be measured by how big or expensive the rock is.”

Affordable!

Disha Shah, Founder and Designer, DiAi Designs feels affordability factor of lab-grown diamonds is also a deal-breaker. She says:

“The ratio of lab-grown diamond engagement ring purchases has increased year on year. With 50-60% of consumption being of lab-grown diamond engagement rings in the US. Once upon a time, attaining a big diamond or any solitaire, for that matter, was a dream and aspiration for most people. Today, it no longer has to be a dream and is attainable. Lab-grown diamonds also give the flexibility of getting any design you want, with any diamond shape or fancy colours. Whether it’s a level of personalisation or wanting a fancy pink diamond, which is rare and very expensive when it comes to natural diamonds. Brides today can wear this every day and at the same time also save up for their travels and future.”

Design Over Dogma

For many modern designers, the “mined vs. lab” debate is secondary to the actual art of the ring. The focus is shifting toward the storytelling and the craftsmanship involved.

As Parekh and Bhansali explain:

“To us, at House of Yarané, craftsmanship and design hold greater priority than the specific diamond or gemstone that goes into the ring. Ultimately, the most meaningful engagement rings are the ones that feel authentic to the couple and the story they want their jewellery to tell.”

So, which one to choose?

So, is a lab-grown diamond right for you? It’s not about which stone is “better” – it’s about which one fits your story. Lab-grown diamonds aren’t just a trend; they are an expansion of choice.

As Isha Zaveri says:

“What lab-grown diamonds really do is expand choice. They allow couples to prioritize individuality, design, and scale, and create a ring that truly feels like their own.”

At the end of the day, there is no “right” or “wrong” here. Some will always find the history of a natural diamond irreplaceable. Others will see a lab-grown stone as the perfect way to get the design they’ve always wanted.

But as Kushal Shah concludes:

“For me, the ring is simply a symbol. What really matters is the moment of giving it, that gesture of commitment and the intention behind it. Whether a diamond is mined or lab-grown, the emotion behind that promise is exactly the same.”

And honestly? That’s the only part that actually lasts.
