US mom who wrote grief book guilty of poisoning husband in $4 million plot

In a quiet Utah courtroom, the fate of 35-year-old Kouri Richins was sealed after a tense and closely watched trial. She was accused of poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with fentanyl in March 2022 at their home, allegedly to inherit his estate worth more than $4 million.

Prosecutors said she was $4.5 million in debt and had also self-published a children’s book about coping with grief. On Monday, after just three hours of deliberation, the jury returned a unanimous verdict: guilty on all charges.

She was convicted of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, mortgage fraud and forgery.

‘SHE WANTED TO LEAVE HUSBAND BUT NOT LEAVE HIS MONEY’

“She wanted to leave Eric Richins but did not want to leave his money,” prosecutors told the court. Kouri, a real estate agent focused on flipping houses, was deep in debt and planning a future with another man, they said.

Prosecutors also argued that she had opened multiple life insurance policies on her husband without his knowledge, totaling about $2 million.

HER HUSBAND WAS FOUND LIFELESS IN THEIR HOME IN MARCH 2022

Eric Richins was found lifeless in their home near Park City in March 2022. Prosecutors alleged that Kouri had carefully planned the murder.

According to court evidence, she prepared a Moscow Mule cocktail for him, secretly laced with a fatal dose of fentanyl — nearly five times the lethal amount.

KOURI PUBLISHED A CHILDREN’S BOOK ABOUT COPING WITH GRIEF

What made the case more unsettling was what followed. In the months after Eric’s death, Kouri published a children’s book about grief, portraying herself as a grieving widow guiding her child.

Meanwhile, investigators uncovered financial irregularities, accusing her of forging documents and finalising a multimillion-dollar real estate deal just a day after his death.

KOURI PLEADED NOT GUILTY TO ALL CHARGES

Throughout the trial, Kouri maintained her innocence, pleading not guilty to all charges. However, the prosecution’s narrative, backed by evidence, ultimately convinced the jury.

WHAT PROSECUTORS SHOWED JURY?

Prosecutors presented text messages between Kouri Richins and Robert Josh Grossman, a man she was allegedly involved with. In them, she spoke about leaving her husband, securing millions in a divorce and marrying Grossman.

Investigators also examined her phone activity. A digital forensic analyst testified that her searches included “what is a lethal dose of fentanyl,” “luxury prisons for the rich America,” and “if someone is poisoned, what does it go down on the death certificate as,” which prosecutors said showed premeditation.

In court, prosecutors replayed Kouri Richins’ 911 call from the night of Eric’s death. While the defence described it as the sound of a grieving wife, prosecutor Bloodworth argued it was not “the sound of a wife becoming a widow,” but “the sound of a wife becoming a black widow.”

KOURI FACES POSSIBILITY OF SPENDING REST OF HER LIFE IN PRISON

Now convicted, she faces life in prison. Her sentencing is scheduled for May 13, the day her husband would have turned 44.

After the verdict, Kouri Richins stared at the floor and took several deep breaths, while Eric Richins’ relatives hugged and cried.

She also faces 26 additional money-related criminal charges in a separate case that has yet to go to trial.
