CBSE Class 12 economics paper moderately difficult with tricky case studies

The CBSE Class 12 Economics board exam held on March 18 this year was largely moderate in difficulty, with a balanced mix of theory, numericals, and case-based questions. Teachers say the paper followed the CBSE pattern and NCERT syllabus closely, though some sections required careful reading and deeper understanding.

PAPER FOLLOWED CBSE PATTERN

Rulee Nath, PGT Economics at Modern English School, Guwahati, said the paper matched expectations.

“The CBSE Class 12 Economics examination paper was well-balanced and largely moderate in difficulty, aligning with expectations. Overall, the question paper followed the pattern and guidelines prescribed in the CBSE sample paper.”

Sonia Rawat, PGT Economics at Global Indian International School, Noida, also described the paper as balanced and scoring.

“The CBSE Class 12 Economics Paper 2026 was moderate and well-balanced, closely aligned with NCERT and previous year patterns. Most questions were concept-based, making the paper scoring for well-prepared students,” she said.

“While MCQs and case studies had a few tricky elements, the overall paper was manageable and not lengthy, allowing students to complete it on time. Concept clarity and proper use of keywords were key to scoring high,” she added.

MIX OF THEORY, NUMERICALS AND CASE STUDIES

The paper included both theory and numericals, along with case-based questions.

“A notable highlight of the paper was that the numerical questions were easy to score. Questions related to national income and basic calculations were straightforward, requiring simple application of formulas rather than complex problem-solving,” Nath said.

Principal Sapna Charha from Modern Public School, Shalimar Bagh, said the paper covered both Macroeconomics and Indian Economic Development with a mix of direct, numerical, and application-based questions.

CASE STUDIES AND APPLICATION QUESTIONS KEY

Case study-based questions played a major role this year and required careful reading.

“Case study-based questions required careful reading and time consuming,” Charha said.

Susmita Nath from JAIN International Residential School in Bengaluru added, “The questions required students to engage in careful reading and deep understanding, as many were framed to assess application and analytical skills rather than rote learning.”

Vidisha Sharma, PGT Economics at St Angels School, Rohini, said the paper focused on conceptual clarity.

“The Class 12 Economics Board Examination this year struck a balanced note—neither overwhelmingly difficult nor too simple, but thoughtfully designed to assess conceptual clarity and application.”

She noted that case studies and real-life application formed a key part of the paper.

“Case study-based questions were prominent, testing real-life application of economic concepts.”

NCERT-BASED AND CONCEPT-DRIVEN

Teachers said the paper stayed close to NCERT and tested understanding rather than memory.

Venketason K, PGT at JAIN International Residential School, said, “Greater weightage was given to conceptual clarity and interpretation skills.”

Vidisha Sharma also pointed out that familiar topics were covered.

“Numericals from National Income and Determination of Income & Employment were expected and manageable Indian Economic Development section included familiar themes like government policies, sustainable development, and economic reforms.”

She added that MCQs were mostly straightforward for prepared students.

“Assertion-Reason and MCQs were largely straightforward for well-prepared students.”

OVERALL PAPER BALANCED AND FAIR

Anupam Agnihotri, PGT Economics at Silverline Prestige School, said the paper was “moderately but not easy, with a mix of case based and conceptual questions,” while Narsingh Raghav from KIIT World School said careful reading was important due to slightly tricky MCQs and changing terminology.

Overall, most teachers agreed the paper was balanced and fair. Students with strong conceptual clarity and regular practice were able to attempt it confidently and complete it within time.
