From space to strike: Russia boosting Iran’s drone war, WSJ reports

Russia has been expanding its military cooperation with Iran by providing satellite imagery and advanced drone technology to support Tehran’s targeting of US forces in the Middle East, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

The report points to a deepening intelligence-sharing arrangement between Moscow and Tehran, with space-based surveillance and upgraded unmanned systems forming the backbone of this evolving partnership.

According to the WSJ, the support is designed to sharpen Iran’s ability to identify and strike American military assets across the region — a move that could significantly raise the stakes in an already volatile conflict.

This is not the first indication of such cooperation. Earlier reports had suggested Russia shared intelligence that could help Iran track US warships, aircraft and other military targets, though officials said there was no clear evidence Moscow was directing how that information should be used.

The latest claims come as the US-Israel war with Iran is now in its third week, with at least 2,000 people killed and no end in sight.

US President Donald Trump, last week, has also publicly voiced suspicion about Moscow’s role. In a radio interview with Fox News, Trump said of Russian President Vladimir Putin: “I think he might be helping them a bit.”

He framed the situation as part of a broader pattern of rival alliances: “And he probably thinks we’re helping Ukraine, right?”

When pressed further, Trump doubled down: “I think he might be helping them a bit, yeah They do it, and we do it.”

However, US officials say Russia has denied the allegations. Following a recent conversation between Trump and Putin, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said Moscow pushed back on claims of intelligence sharing.

“The Russians said they have not been sharing Let’s hope that they’re not sharing,” Witkoff said in an interview with CNBC.

Meanwhile, Gulf states were back under fire on Tuesday, with Iran launching fresh waves of missiles and drones targeting oil facilities and key infrastructure, while tightening its grip on the Strait of Hormuz. Israel, meanwhile, carried out new strikes in Iran and Lebanon.
