Huawei plans comeback in India, tablet likely to be its first new device

From being one of the top smartphone brands in India to almost disappearing from the consumer market, Huawei has a long history in the country. The company once competed closely with Samsung and Xiaomi in the smartphone segment, but its India operations slowed down significantly after global sanctions in 2020 and the loss of Google services on its devices. Cut to 2026, it seems the Chinese tech giant is preparing for its comeback in India, and the first device could be a tablet instead of a smartphone.

Speculation about Huawei’s return in India started after a teaser banner was spotted on Flipkart, hinting at an upcoming launch from the brand. Flipkart has created a dedicated Huawei brand page with a simple “Launching soon” message, along with an outline image that closely resembles a tablet. Other than that, there are no details on product name, price, or launch date.

Huawei teaser

According to industry chatter, the first device Huawei is planning to launch in India after its comeback could be a tablet. Early leaks suggest that the device might be the Huawei MatePad 11.5, a model that is already available in global markets. The silhouette in the teaser matches the design of this tablet, leading to speculation that the Indian variant could either be the same device or a slightly modified version. The MatePad 11.5 is known for its large display and productivity-focused features, making it suitable for students, casual users, and people looking for a portable device for work and entertainment.

Globally, the MatePad 11.5 comes with an 11.5-inch LCD display with a sharp 2K-class resolution and a high refresh rate for smoother visuals. The tablet features a slim metal body weighing around 500 grams, making it easy to carry. It is also equipped with a large battery in the 10,000mAh range, along with support for fast charging. The cameras are basic and are mainly designed for video calls, scanning documents, and everyday use rather than photography.

It is worth noting that even though Huawei stopped launching smartphones in India a few years ago but never completely exited the country. Its smartwatches and audio products have continued to appear on e-commerce platforms, showing that the brand has maintained a limited presence in the market.

For now, Huawei has not officially confirmed the product name or launch date, but the Flipkart teaser makes it clear that a new device is on the way. If the tablet launch turns out to be successful, it could mark the beginning of a broader comeback for Huawei in India, a country that is currently one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer technology markets.
