It is Rohit Sharma, not Shubman Gill: Fans slam BCCI over huge mistake in Naman Awards

Rohit Sharma fans have been left fuming with the Indian cricket board after the BCCI’s silly mistake at the Naman Awards 2026. Razor-eyed Rohit fans spotted on TV that the BCCI graphics team addressed Shubman Gill as the Champions Trophy-winning captain, a mistake that did not sit right with them.

A section of Rohit Sharma’s fans hit out at the BCCI, alleging that the board was trying to whitewash what Rohit had done with the ODI team as the captain of the side. Gill, meanwhile, was the vice-captain of the Indian ODI team at the time, which beat New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy in Dubai.

Despite winning the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma was removed from the position of India’s ODI captain. The mantle was handed to young Shubman Gill, who had taken over the Test side as well. As India builds for the 2027 ODI World Cup, the focus and scrutiny will be on Gill and the playstyle that India adopt under him.

After a tough start to his tenure against Australia, Shubman Gill fared well against New Zealand just before the T20 World Cup. Under his captaincy, Rohit Sharma started brilliantly in Australia, but fizzled out later on.

One player who has risen to his best once again, unburdened by the weight of leadership, is Virat Kohli. The batter has reinvented his batting in the push for the ODI World Cup and has raked in runs for fun in the recent ODIs.

India ODI captain Shubman Gill did not feature in the T20 World Cup side. The batter will now focus on the Indian Premier League’s 2026 season and then focus on the ODI side, which will play Afghanistan and then England in back to back bilaterals.

India coach Gautam Gambhir had earlier mentioned that he will have the blueprint for ODI World Cup 2027 ready by the end of the IPL 2026, and Shubman Gill will play a key part in implementing his plans.
