Anthropic links Claude with Excel and PowerPoint to automate workflows

Anthropic has announced new updates that connect its AI assistant Claude more closely with workplace tools. The company has introduced deeper integration between Claude and two widely used apps in Microsoft 365 — Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. The goal is to make it easier for users to work with data and presentations without constantly moving between different apps.

With the latest update, Claude can now maintain a single continuous conversation across Excel and PowerPoint. This removes the need for users to repeatedly copy and paste information between the AI chatbot and these applications. Once data is shared in one tool, Claude can remember the context and use the same information in another tool during the same workflow.

For instance, a financial analyst working with spreadsheet data can ask Claude to review numbers in Excel and then convert the insights into slides inside PowerPoint. The process can happen without manually re-entering the data or switching tabs.

Anthropic has also introduced a feature called Claude Skills within the Excel and PowerPoint add-ins. These Skills act as reusable automated workflows. Once a specific task is identified — such as converting spreadsheet data into a presentation, the process can be saved as a Skill and reused later. Other team members in the organisation can access the same workflow with a single click.

The company says this feature is designed to help teams share best practices and reduce the need for everyone to learn complex AI prompts. Anthropic is also offering a set of preloaded starter Skills for common tasks to help users get started.

The new shared context experience and Skills integration are available for Mac and Windows users who are on Claude’s paid plans. Free users will not be able to access these features for now.

The announcement has also sparked some discussion online about AI reliability. Citing Polymarket, a user on X claimed that Claude reportedly entered an “infinite loop” during a daylight saving time change, which caused issues for some developers using AI-assisted coding tools. However, there are currently no confirmed details about the incident.

As AI assistants become more integrated with workplace software, some users have also raised questions about data handling and privacy. Since Claude can read data directly from spreadsheets, organisations may need to be careful about the type of information they share with AI tools.

Despite these concerns, Anthropic believes the new integration could help users save time and improve productivity when working with spreadsheets and presentations.
