End of an era: The Missoni family says goodbye to its iconic fashion house

For decades, the name Missoni has meant colour. Not just any colour, but bold zig-zags, hypnotic stripes, and knitwear that almost looked like art. The brand became instantly recognisable across the world. You could spot a Missoni piece from across the room.

But now, something major has changed.

After nearly seventy years of running the label they built from scratch, the Missoni family is stepping away from the company entirely. The fashion house will now move into new hands, marking the end of one of the last big family-run chapters in Italian luxury fashion.

For people who grew up admiring those famous knit patterns, it really does feel like the end of an era.

The Brand That Made Knitwear Fashion

Missoni began in 1953 when husband-and-wife duo Ottavio and Rosita Missoni started experimenting with knit fabrics. At a time when knitwear was mostly plain and practical, they decided to do something different.

They added colour. A lot of it.

Suddenly there were zig-zags, stripes, and patterns that felt playful and artistic. The clothes were comfortable, but they also made a statement. That combination quickly caught attention in the fashion world.

And slowly, Missoni built a reputation that travelled far beyond Italy.

Their knit dresses, sweaters, and scarves started appearing on international runways and in glossy magazines. Over time the brand became a favourite among celebrities and fashion insiders. It carried that relaxed, slightly bohemian Italian glamour people loved.

You could wear it at a beach holiday, a dinner party, or even a red carpet event.

A Major Ownership Shift

Now the company is moving into a completely different phase.

Milan-based private equity firm FSI has taken the lead in acquiring a majority stake in the fashion house. The firm had already invested in Missoni earlier, but this new deal significantly expands its control.

FSI will now hold around seventy-three percent of the company.

Another investment group, Katjes International, has acquired the remaining twenty-seven percent through its Katjes Quiet Luxury division.

The exact value of the deal hasn’t been made public. But one thing is clear. The Missoni family is fully stepping away from ownership.

After decades of running the label themselves, they’re handing over the keys to a brand that has become part of fashion history.

What Happens to the Brand Now?

Whenever a heritage fashion house changes ownership, loyal fans usually get nervous.

Will the designs change? Will the brand lose its identity?

For now, the company says things will continue along the same path.

Livio Proli, who became CEO in 2020, will stay in his role. He’s already well known in the fashion industry and previously worked with Giorgio Armani. Under his leadership, Missoni has seen strong growth again after the pandemic years.

The brand’s revenues are currently around €130 million, which shows that the label still has strong global demand.

So the goal, at least for now, seems simple. Keep the momentum going.

Missoni’s Place in Fashion Culture

Missoni has always occupied a unique space in fashion.

It’s luxurious, yes. But it’s never felt stiff or intimidating. The clothes have always carried a relaxed elegance.

Those colourful knits became a kind of signature language. Designers, stylists, and fashion lovers instantly recognise them.

Over the years the brand found fans everywhere. Hollywood celebrities wore Missoni on red carpets. Fashion editors praised its craftsmanship. Even Bollywood’s style-conscious crowd embraced its breezy knit dresses and vibrant cardigans.

And because the patterns are so distinctive, they rarely go out of style. A Missoni piece from twenty years ago can still look fresh today.

That kind of longevity is rare in fashion.

The Family Steps Back, But Not Completely

Even though the Missoni family is leaving the business side of things, they are not disappearing entirely.

Instead of managing corporate decisions or retail expansions, they will focus on preserving the brand’s legacy. The family will continue their work through the Fondazione Ottavio e Rosita Missoni.

The foundation celebrates the creative history of the brand and honours the work of its founders. It’s a way to protect the artistic spirit that made Missoni famous in the first place.

So while they won’t be running the company anymore, their story will remain deeply tied to it.

Why This Moment Feels Big

Fashion has changed a lot over the last few decades.

Many historic labels that once belonged to families are now controlled by large luxury groups or investment firms. It’s often the only way brands can compete globally in today’s market.

Still, every time a family-run house steps aside, it marks a shift.

Missoni wasn’t just another fashion brand. It was a dynasty built on creativity, patience, and craftsmanship.

For nearly seventy years, the family shaped every part of the label’s identity. From the colours to the textures to the relaxed Italian spirit that ran through every collection.

That kind of continuity is rare.

The Next Chapter

What happens next will be closely watched.

With strong financial backing and experienced leadership, the brand could expand further into new markets and product categories. Luxury fashion today moves quickly, and companies often need serious investment to stay competitive.

But the challenge will be keeping the soul of Missoni intact.

Because at its heart, the brand has always been about more than just clothes. It’s about colour, craftsmanship, and a distinctly Italian sense of style that never tries too hard.

And for many fashion lovers around the world, that spirit is what truly defines Missoni.

The ownership may be changing. But the hope is that those iconic zig-zag knits will keep telling the same vibrant story for years to come.
