Dhurandhar 2 brings the Ari Ari era back: 2-decade-old Punjabi banger powers trailer

Dhurandhar: The Revenge may be loaded with geopolitical tension and India-Pakistan references, but there’s another layer to Aditya Dhar’s action universe that fans have quickly picked up on: nostalgia. Not just visual callbacks or thematic throwbacks, but musical nostalgia that hits instantly.

The playbook of Dhurandhar: The Revenge may be getting ready to explode on screen, but the internet is already vibing to something else from the trailer: Ari Ari, the new-old Punjabi banger Dhar has revived for the sequel.

The track is actually more than two decades old. Ari Ari was originally released in 2003 by the Danish-Punjabi duo Bombay Rockers, as part of their debut album, Introducing. The group comprised Danish-Indian singer Navtej Rehal, who worked closely with producers Thomas Sardorf and Janus Barnewitz.

The Bombay Rockers vibe

At the time, Bombay Rockers were doing something quite different. Their idea was simple but bold: take Punjabi hooks, mix them with Western pop, hip-hop and club beats, and create a sound that could work both in India and across the diaspora. The result was a wave of Punjabi pop that felt global without losing its roots.

For a generation that grew up in the early 2000s, their songs were everywhere. Tracks like Rock Tha Party, Let’s Dance, Hit the Dhol, Sexy Mama, Sajna Ve, and Nava Nava became staples for a generation discovering that Punjabi vocals and English pop aesthetics could actually work brilliantly together.

But Ari Ari had a special kind of energy.

Part of its catchiness comes from the way the song borrows from traditional Punjabi folk boliyan, particularly the playful chant Wari Warsi. In Punjabi culture, boliyan are short, rhythmic verses sung during celebrations — weddings, gidda performances, and festive gatherings. They are cheeky, repetitive, and designed to make people clap, dance and sing along instantly.

The Punjabi folk angle

Ari Ari essentially takes that folk call-and-response spirit and drops it into a modern club track. The Wari Warsi style phrasing gives the song its bounce, while the electronic production turns it into a dance-floor anthem. It is folk energy meeting early-2000s pop, which is probably why the hook still refuses to leave your head.

Looking back, the track was part of the first wave of global Punjabi pop reaching Indian listeners, long before Punjabi music became the streaming powerhouse it is today, or before Bollywood began leaning heavily on Punjabi beats for chartbusters.

Which is why its return inside the Dhurandhar universe feels oddly perfect.

The film is built around high-octane nationalism, covert operations and cross-border tensions, and dropping a cult Punjabi pop track from the early 2000s does something interesting to it. It grounds the noise of its theme in a cultural memory. It adds more familiarity to the vibe of the film — making it all slightly unexpected but instantly hype-worthy.

And judging by the way fans are already looping the trailer just for that beat drop, Dhar may have subtly pulled off a clever move (when has he not, though?). He has turned a 2003 club anthem into a 2026 trailer moment. And well, where else can you fit this style if not the Dhurandhar universe!

Dhurandhar: The Revenge may not have arrived yet, but thanks to Ari Ari, the party around it has already started.
